Joe Minchella, 31, the boss of family ice cream business Minchella & Co has scooped the national ‘Guido Morelli Rising Star’ award from the Ice Cream Alliance, the trade body for the UK's £1.4 bn per year ice cream industry.

“I feel very honoured,” commented Joe. “But it’s a team effort. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without the hard work and dedication of every member of our team across the whole company.”

The company was founded by Joe’s grandfather in 1942. It’s still very much a family business which Joe first started working in when he was 15. Today it employs 30 people across two parlours and one factory.

So why did Joe go into the ice cream business? “I fell in love with manufacturing our family recipes, developing new ideas and seeing the final products enjoyed by the people visiting and living in South Shields.”

Joe has been at the forefront of catering to the changing tastes of the UK consumer. Across the whole ice cream sector vegan varieties are one of the biggest growth areas. At the same awards Minchella & Co won first prize for its Vegan Peach ice cream – part of an expanding vegan range of products.

“We all have great pride in our family and company name. We will continue to grow, improve and create more exciting products.” Joe added: “And I would like to thank my parents and my partner Jade who has always supported me whilst being a fantastic mother to our 10-month son Federico.”

The Guido Morelli Rising Star award is part of the Awards organised annually by the Ice Cream Alliance (ICA), the UK’s ice cream industry trade association. The Rising Star award was created in 2014 in memory of ICA past president, Guido Morelli, a member of the family that runs the eponymous world-famous Irish ice cream company. It recognises young talent, or someone new to the industry, who is going to make their mark.

“Joe Minchella is a very worthy winner of one of the most prestigious awards” commented Zelica Carr, ICA CEO. “We will watch the progress of his career with great interest.”
