The winner of this years’ Large Artistic Class ‘Wedding Cake’ creation was Minoli’s of Machen, with the entry sculpted by Sue Richards.
In 1987, Lewis and Sue Richards set up Minoli’s of Machen after attending a two week course and learning how to make ice cream. Lewis spent the first 30 years of his life as a dairy farmer and was keen to use his knowledge of good milk to make excellent ice cream. Sue said “My husband Lew had dealt with milk all his life from growing up on a dairy farm, milking firstly by hand, then we had milk rounds for 15 years so transfer on to ice cream making came naturally to him and after winning our first ICA competition we knew we had it right and our business went from strength to strength.”
Lewis sadly passed away in August 2017, but his terrific contribution to the ice cream industry was commemorated by The Ice Cream Alliance with the Marvin Benton Award that was presented to Sue at the Presidents Ball in February.
Reflecting on her success in the Large Artistic class, Sue said: “The large ice cream cake class does take a lot of time and effort; from planning to basic cake making and then decorating, it is a lot of work but well worth it to win the beautiful prestigious prize of the rose bowl.”
Well done Sue, your patience really paid off!
Next years’ Large Artistic theme is ‘ICA 75th Anniversary’ and we are looking forward to seeing what masterpieces are created!
